Flat plans
Double page
This is a draft for my double page that i drew up on a piece of paper. I followed conventions on this by making sure i put the logo in the left hand side which is where throughout my blog i have placed it. From my research below this is what i concluded on how the layout of my double page spread page would look.
Contents
For my contents page i also made a flat plan, showing how i would set it out and which order everything would go in. From the examples of other well known music magazines i came up with this for my final idea. I planned it on paper so i could keep referring it to mine whilst making it on Photoshop.
Front cover
This is the plan for my front cover i made before i started to make it. I put in the barcode, price and other things i knew would be essential for the music magazine.

Name ideas for my magazine-
- MUSE
- UPDATES
- BEATS
- IMIX
- RHYTHM
- IU- INDUSTRY UPDATES
- MIU- MUSIC INDUSTRY UPDATES
I decided to chose MIU (Music Industry updates) as the name for my music magazine. Once i had made my final decision i then tested out some different fonts and colours that i thought would look good.
This is my Questionnaire analysis which helped me decide the following-
- To aim my magazine at both male and female
- 17-21 Target audience
- For the magazine to be sold every two weeks
- POP/INDIE genre of music
- Red, Black and White to be the main colours on my magazine
- A free poster would increase sales
- To charge approximately £1-£2
On this magazine the masthead ‘Q’ takes up the majority of
the space which is on the top left and a bright red colour. The reason for it
being so big compared to everything else on the page and a bright colour is so
that the audience automatically recognises the brand which stands out on the
dark magazine. At the very top of the page the Tagline is telling the buyers
what the magazine is about and sums up the ‘Q’ in the shortest possible way.
The tagline is white which instantly works with the black background ‘THE UK’S
BIGGEST MUSIC MAGAZINE’ with words such as ‘biggest’ and ‘music’ it would
already be appealing to the target audience of teenagers because basically all
teenagers listen to music and discuss music with their friends. The colour
scheme of this magazine is black white and red which works very well together,
the red and the white show up very well on the black background and her dark
hair. On the Right hand side of the page there is information of the content
inside the magazine in a mixture of red grey and white, by making ‘The 10 best
new acts’ in grey in the middle of the black white and red it stands out and is
something the audience want to know. At the bottom of the page it is in bold
block writing ‘CHERYL COLE ROCKS’ which is to inform the readers who is on the
front page. Although they are telling you who it is, the use of a big celebrity
endorsement is so that it encourages fans and people who respect what she has
done in the public eye to buy it. The colour of this writing also works well
with the mid-shot of her. On the left hand side of the magazine you can see
more big named celebrities are featured inside such as snow patrol, muse and 50
cent, this is on the front so if you aren’t necessarily a big fan of the main
article (Cheryl Cole) there is something for everyone.
This is a front cover from The Rolling Stone magazine and features Rihanna. Even though you can’t see the masthead it is such a known brand of music magazine that the majority of people either know what they are looking at or consistently buy the magazine because they know what to expect. The Rolling Stone font is very well known and is usually the bright red colour that it is on this front cover. This bright red works with the colour of Rihanna’s hair and the blurred pictures of the trees. This light green colour for the background also works well with the bold black font for the sweet spot. Many well-known people are named on this magazine such as ‘Britney Spears’ and ‘Ricky Gervais’ which encourages the target audience to buy it. I think this magazine is aimed at teenagers. The block writing saying ‘Rihanna strikes back’ is what the publisher is hoping will sell the magazine, making customers wonder what has happened to her and buying to get an insight to her personal life. By RollingStone magazine using Rihanna has the main mid shot on the front this would attract audiences that wouldn't usually pick up the magazine. The image is appealing to all types of audience both male and female.
This double page spread by NME is about Pete Doherty who is
very well known for his music, taking heavy drugs regularly and drinking a lot.
In bold across the midshot of him is large writing saying ‘IN GOOD HEALTH’
which makes the reader wonder if he really is, as he is holding Two pints of
alcohol. This masthead makes the reader confused and intrigued as to why he is
holding two pints if he is in such good health. The creator of this magazine
has worked well with choosing the colours of the this magazine and putting the
word ‘GOOD’ in orange as it is a dark picture apart from the orange pint of
beer. Apart from that the photo is very dark as his hair is black, t shirt is a
dark colour and the back ground isn’t very clear. This could suggest to the
readers and fans that he isn’t in good health and encourage them to read as
they are hoping he isn’t back to his dark ways. On the other side of the double
page it is mainly writing with a large ‘A’ also in orange. Although this could
put people off in the middle of all of the text they have written ‘People say,
‘Oh. Peter used to be your singer’.
I’m like, ‘What are you talking about? Used to be?!’ making the
words that would attract the readers in bold. I think that this is a good idea
on emphasising on these words as the target audience is mainly aimed at
teenagers. This Double page spread is mainly set out in columns and has giving
me a clearer idea of how I want to set my magazine out.
This contents page follows the colour scheme of the ‘Q’ logo
of red and white. The masthead is relatively small but looks neat as the
writing is bold white font and the background is black. In the centre of the
page there is a mid-shot of the band covering most of the page. This is a good
way to attract the audience because the page is not over powering the writing
which would encourage people to look at this and not see it as unnecessary. The
bold writing of the ‘The Courteeners’ shows they are probably the main article
and are going to be what attracts the audience to buy this copy of the
magazine. This contents page has been
put in to columns so it is easier to read and looks professional. The ‘every month’ on the left hand side of the
page show that there is consistency in the magazine which means that people do
buy the magazine, this makes the audience more likely to buy it if they know
people will be talking about it. Also on the left hand side there is a column
on ‘features’ which will tell people what else is in the magazine. Having the numbers in a clear red makes them easy to locate, meaning that articles are easily found. This makes it more of an enjoyable task for the audience looking for what you want to read about and less of an annoying thing.
Music magazine task
After completing my Sixth Form magazine i now feel that i have the skills and confidence to start working on the main task of creating a music magazine. This will consist of Deconstructing well known music magazines, researching music magazines, flat plans and creating a final front cover, contents page and double page spread. After i have created the magazine i will be writing an evaluation about my final piece.
